Bearing Edges are perhaps one of the most important aspects to great sounding drums. So what are they? Bearing Edges are the top and bottom edges of the drum shell which the drum heads rest on, or in other words the edges of the drum shell that comes in direct contact with the drum heads. These edges must be well aligned, level and balanced to achieve a nice even tone and great sounding drum that is easy to tune.
ATTENTION: Unlike other processes in Drum Building that can be done by hand, Bearing Edges require a good bench router set up and experience in using power tools. Routers can be very dangerous and cause serious injury if used incorrectly. If you are not an experienced tradesman, woodworker or crafts person who has the correct machinery and skills, then we recommend you let us cut the bearing edges for you. Please choose Bearing Edge Cutting Service for your size shell below.
So which one to choose? Basically speaking the sharper the edge the brighter or sharper brighter the tone / the rounder the edge the fatter or rounder the tone. If you are not sure which edge is best for you then we recommend a 45 Double which is pretty much the industry standard edge these days and a good place to start. However if you would like more information / advice please email us and we will assist you in working out which is the right edge for your project. CONTACT EDGE EXPERT
